For brands, clubs and distributors ordering custom sports jerseys, the decoration method affects price, comfort, appearance and repeat-order consistency. Two commonly compared choices are dye sublimation and embroidery. Neither is universally superior: the best option depends on fabric, artwork, playing conditions and order quantity.
What is dye sublimation?
Dye sublimation uses heat to transfer suitable dyes into polyester fibers. On compatible white or light-colored polyester, the result can produce vibrant graphics across large panels without a heavy surface print. This is why all-over sublimation is popular for basketball, football, cycling and esports teamwear. Colors and reproducibility depend on suitable fabric, design setup and process control.
What is embroidery?
Embroidery stitches thread onto garments or patches. It adds a tactile, premium finish particularly suitable for small logos, crests and initials. Large dense embroidery areas may increase weight, stiffness, stitching time and cost. Mesh and lightweight performance fabrics may need careful backing, placement and testing.
Sublimation vs embroidery at a glance
| Buyer consideration | Sublimation | Embroidery |
|---|---|---|
| Best design fit | Large full-color and all-over artwork | Small emblems, patches, lettering and premium accents |
| Typical fabric suitability | Polyester-based fabric; confirm composition and color | Many fabrics subject to construction and stability |
| Hand feel | Usually low-profile on suitable fabric | Raised stitched texture |
| Cost drivers | Fabric, panels, finishing and quantity | Stitch count, size, backing, placement and quantity |
| Complex gradient artwork | Typically well suited | May require simplification or a patch |
Which method is more durable?
Performance depends on the approved fabric, dye or thread, laundry conditions and construction. Properly executed sublimation is generally resistant to cracking associated with some surface prints because the color is carried in the fabric. Embroidery can offer long-lived logos but may snag or pucker if unsuitable for the jersey material. Request wash tests and an approved physical sample instead of relying on blanket durability claims.
What changes the cost per jersey?
For sublimation, key variables include fabric GSM, garment construction, panel layout, printing process, sewing and total units. For embroidery, ask for the digitized artwork size, stitch count, number of locations, patch construction and associated setup charges. More complex orders may combine techniques.
For illustration, a buyer might choose fully sublimated panels for a large mascot and background, then add small embroidered crests. This avoids heavy dense stitching across the whole jersey while preserving premium detail. Prices and minimum order quantities must be confirmed from a current quotation; no single universal unit price applies.
How do MOQ and sampling work?
Minimum order quantity is usually affected by fabric availability, custom colors, sizes, trim procurement and factory scheduling. Ask whether MOQ applies per design, per color or per combined order. Approve a pre-production sample with final graphics, fabric, names, numbers, size grading and finishing before authorizing bulk production.
Choosing a fabric for basketball and other teamwear
A lightweight polyester mesh may provide airflow for basketball jerseys, while interlock or other knit structures can suit different sports and teamwear applications. Specify intended use, fabric composition, target GSM, breathability, stretch, colorfastness and wash-care requirements. The decoration choice should follow the actual fabric rather than precede it.
Seven checks before placing a private-label jersey order
- Supply vector artwork, exact Pantone or approved color references where appropriate, and print-size guidelines.
- Specify jersey measurements, size tolerance, cut, neckline and armhole construction.
- Request actual pre-production samples for each decoration approach.
- Clarify labels, hangtags, polybags, carton markings and ownership of artwork.
- Confirm sample fees, approved production lead times, MOQ and repeat-order standards.
- Agree inspection criteria covering sewing, measurements, colors, embellishment and packing.
- Request a quotation with the named Incoterm, delivery destination and commercial payment terms.
When a hybrid construction works best
Premium jerseys can pair sublimated backgrounds with sewn-on letters or numbers and small embroidered logos. The extra operations add complexity and cost, so discuss placement, weight, comfort and repeatability at the sampling stage. For entry-level club jerseys, a simpler full-sublimation specification may be more economical.
